In order to do that, you need to make sure that the program you choose for your son or daughter encourages and fosters this goal. Let’s take a look at some key factors to help you narrow your search down.
We strongly recommend sending your teen out-of-state; away from negative influences, temptations, and unhealthy triggers that only allow their poor choices and behavior to continue. A new environment promotes new perspectives, opportunities for new experiences, and limits the risk of a child running away. We also suggest a program that offers nature as part of their healing program. Your child should have the opportunity to explore new talents, challenge themselves intellectually and physically with activities like camping, hiking, skiing, and more. This can be a very important part of the process as we have seen our teens learn new things and build confidence and self-worth. Do not limit your search to programs only in your state or home area. If the quality of care and the quality of the program, which should be your primary focus, is better at an out-of-state program then we suggest keeping an open mind to those options; it affords your child better care and a greater chance for success by getting away from their currently unhealthy environment. Your child is struggling and they truly deserve the best chance at long-term recovery – always let this be the guiding force of your decision.
Think about how hard it is for even an adult to change a bad habit or poor behavior, now add in the fact that there are hormonal changes happening, school stressors, peer pressure, social media, and other outside influences affecting a teen’s life and self-perception every single day. We recommend longer than a short 30-60 days for their treatment. We know that a month or two may seem like a long time, but in the big picture it’s just not enough. The longer the child has the opportunity to be treated the better chance they have at living a life full of happiness and health. We suggest considering a program that offers 3-12 months of care. This will provide your loved one with the chance to work through any issues that have been holding them back and to recover and build a strong foundation that will allow him/her to thrive once they leave treatment.
The cost of a quality treatment program can seem can seem nearly impossible to afford, but we are here to help you through the insurance and cost process so that you can make the best decision for your teen; one based on quality of the program and not cost alone.
