TRICARE East and Turning Winds: A Lifeline for Military Teens Facing Mental Health Struggles
The Urgent Need for Teen Mental Health Support in Military Families
Resilience is a way of life for military families. Yet, even the strongest and most courageous among us sometimes need support. Especially when raising teenagers who struggle with mental health or behavioral health issues.
Military life demands frequent moves, long deployments, and constant uncertainty. Consequently, even the most resilient military families experience overwhelming stress and invisible strains.
Not surprisingly, adapting to a new home, school, and community takes a significant toll on a fragile teen’s mental health and well-being. In this article, we take a closer look at TRICARE East’s coverage for residential treatment. In addition to other benefits related to treating teen mental health.

Why Teen Mental Health Matters: Understanding Treatment Options
Today’s adolescents face unique challenges and pressures unlike any previous generation. Consequently, this has led to an alarming rise in teen emotional and behavioral health issues. Adding to this, consider the intense academic pressures and the pervasive influence of social media in teens’ daily lives. It is no wonder so many are struggling with their emotional well-being.
The Surgeon General described it as a ‘mental health epidemic.” Highlighting the urgent need for more effective interventions and teen mental health treatment.
Recognizing the critical need for specialized mental health support for military teens, TRICARE East has approved Turning Winds Residential Treatment Center as a comprehensive treatment provider option. Turning Winds now accepts TRICARE East as an insurance option for military families whose teens are in need of residential care. This collaboration aims to provide a lifeline for military families seeking recovery and healing for their adolescents.
Recognizing Teen Mental Health Warning Signs: A Parent’s Guide
According to Pew Research, nearly 70% of parents believe it’s harder to be a teenager today than it was for previous generations. Parents need to recognize the warning signs that a teen may be struggling, such as:
- Significant changes in mood or behavior
- Withdrawing from activities once enjoyed
- Sudden academic decline or discipline issues
Understanding the Unique Stressors Faced by Military Teens
While all adolescents grapple with mounting pressures, military teens face more stress, resulting from the unique stressors of military life.
Long separations from deployed parents and the high levels of uncertainty caused by the frequent moves, the distance from the extended families, and other stressors typically intensify emotional struggles and behavioral health issues.
These pressures can significantly impact a teen’s emotional health. In fact, research shows that adolescents in military-connected families are 28% more likely to experience depression symptoms and 42% more likely to report lower life satisfaction compared to their civilian peers.[1]
These findings highlight the critical importance of providing early mental health intervention and targeted support for military teens navigating the unique pressures of military life.

From Resistance to Hope - A Parent's Story
Our Experience with TRICARE and Turning Winds
It began about a year ago. We were obviously, I guess, a lot [sic] clueless of what was going on. We thought we ran a pretty tight ship, but he was sneaking out, us not knowing. And one day he ran away. He was on the 05:00 news. He was missing for 4 days. And that's just when things started snowballing.
He went to the mental hospital. Once he got out of the mental hospital, he entered a 30 day treatment facility. And during that time we moved, but his troubles just followed us, we had the cops at our house at least 3 times in the first month. He was truant, he refused to go to school. He ended up in another mental hospital. He said he was suicidal.
We spoke to Turning Winds and they walked us through all the steps with TRICARE, there are a lot of steps. They helped us with the social worker, the documentation and the approvals were done.
I didn't want to do it. I was very resistant and I was actually really resistant the whole first month he was there, wondering if I made the right decision, but the regret of not making a choice like that would have been much bigger than the latter and, I wish I was more open to it sooner, but I'm glad we made the choice that we did.

Real-Life Success Story: TRICARE East & Turning Winds
My Son's Recovery
When our son's anxiety and depression got out of control after my husband’s last deployment, I didn’t know where to turn, and I felt lost and overwhelmed. Therapy didn’t work. He began to self-medicate and had to be hospitalized twice. It felt like everything we tried failed.
Then, we were told about Turning Winds and found out they accepted TRICARE East. This was a real chance to help my son, but we had to send him to Montana. I was very uneasy about it, I couldn’t afford to travel to Montana, so we took the virtual tour, and just WOW! It looked so peaceful and clean, I just felt it in my soul that this was the answer I was seeking.
From the first phone call, the admissions team made me feel heard and supported. They worked closely with TRICARE and helped us understand everything we needed to know to make our decision. They guided us through the admissions process and after he arrived, they kept me informed and made me feel like I was part of the solution. Turning Winds helped our son rebuild his confidence, learn how to manage his emotions, and get back on track academically. He's smiling again. He's setting goals again. We have hope again, something we hadn’t felt in a long time.
We are forever grateful for the heart, patience, and true care the Turning Winds staff showed our family. They didn’t just help our son heal — they helped our whole family heal." — Sarah D., Proud Military Mom, North Carolina
